What is my gun worth?
Anyone who wants to sell a firearm privately first needs to find out what price they can realistically expect. This depends not necessarily on the age of the firearm, but primarily on its condition.
There are several ways to get a quick estimate:
Estimating the value of a firearm:
First, you can ask a gunsmith or local dealer for an assessment or an offer. However, a dealer's offer will naturally come in below the achievable price, since the dealer wants to make a profit on resale.
A second option is to get an idea of the prices at which comparable firearms are being traded. Our Gunfinder search results quickly give you an overview of the prices at which firearm models are being listed.
The third option is to fill out our form — our experts will then assess your firearm based on the information you provide. Important: The more precise and detailed the information, the more accurate the assessment can be. We'll send you the result of our valuation by email.
How is the firearm assessed:
Overall condition: What do the wear parts look like? Is the bluing intact? Are there any rust spots on the barrel? What condition is the woodwork in?
Brand and model: Well-known and popular brands hold their value well, because they enjoy high popularity and trust on one hand, and repairs and spare parts availability are not an issue on the other.
Caliber: The more common and popular the caliber, the more likely affordable ammunition in various loads is available. As a result, widely used calibers have a positive effect on a firearm's value.
Firearm type: Bolt-action rifles and over-and-under shotguns are the most popular firearms among German hunters and are therefore in the highest demand. Combination firearms like the classic drilling have fallen out of fashion, which negatively impacts their price.
Riflescopes: Mounted optics only add notable value if they are relatively new. Nowadays, almost all hunters switch to a riflescope with a red dot when purchasing a new firearm. Older models are difficult to sell and typically only fetch low prices.
