Data, facts & information

Hunting ammunition for rifles consists of cartridges that can be fired from rifles (long guns with rifled barrels). The projectiles are often referred to as "bullets." A single shot precisely fires a projectile - in contrast to shotgun shells, which are fired from smoothbore barrels and scatter many small pellets.

Hunting ammunition aims to achieve a strong and lethal effect on the game animal, ensuring that it dies quickly and without suffering. However, manufacturers also pay attention to minimizing damage to the meat, as hunters want to obtain as much meat as possible. Significant destruction of the meat and large openings from entry and exit wounds can lead to greater contamination of the entire carcass.

Rifle cartridge casings often have a bottle shape, which allows for an increased powder chamber without making the length-to-diameter ratio of the casing too large. If the casings are too elongated, there is a risk that the charge will not ignite completely during firing, causing unburned powder to exit the barrel, which would reduce performance. The casings of cartridges for heavier hunting calibers, such as .30-06 Springfield or 8 x 57 IS, are cylindrical or slightly conical.

The costs for hunting cartridges vary significantly depending on caliber, load, and bullet type. Typically, cartridges are sold in packages of 20-50 pieces. Common hunting cartridges usually cost between 50-110€ for a pack of 20.

The most significant distinction regarding hunting ammunition is likely between lead-free and lead-containing hunting cartridges.

After lead-containing ammunition had been established for hunting for many decades, its use is increasingly restricted by environmental protection regulations and is now completely banned in some federal states. As a result, the market share of lead-free ammunition is rapidly growing.

Furthermore, there is also a distinction between full, full metal jacket, partial jacket, fragmentation, and deformation projectiles.

Hunting cartridges can be purchased by anyone who has a valid acquisition permit (hunting license for hunters, firearms ownership card for sport shooters). However, for the latter, cartridges of this type are generally quite uninteresting. They usually rely on training or competition ammunition.

Hunting cartridges can be purchased either from your trusted gunsmith / firearms dealer or online from countless shops. Many hunters also buy their ammunition at their local Frankonia branch.
