Shipping Firearms

Updated on July 14, 2026

What do I need to consider legally when shipping firearms?

According to §34 Para. 1 of the Waffengesetz, the seller of a listing requiring an EWB must ensure that the item is only handed over to the authorized recipient. When shipping, this can only be achieved through an identity verification of the authorized recipient by the contracted carrier.

However, the terms and conditions of many shipping companies exclude the transport of firearms, so sellers must check for themselves whether shipping with the respective company is permitted.

We recommend using the market leader OVERNITE for shipping firearms.

After booking, the OVERNITE courier will collect the shipment on weekdays by appointment and deliver it to the recipient as quickly as possible. The recipient will be notified before delivery to ensure they can receive the shipment in person.

Can I ship firearms and ammunition together?

For safety reasons, firearms and ammunition may only be shipped separately — not in the same package.

How do I pack a firearm?

This is really important: the package must not show any external indication of its contents — so never write "firearm" or anything similar on the box. This also applies to labels. Better to write "Company X" than "Gun Shop X" on the label.

In addition, firearms must be securely packed in a sturdy container. It must not be easy to open, and the firearm must be protected during transport.

We recommend shipping the firearm in a plain, unmarked cardboard box filled with padding and cushioning material.

Where do I get a box for my firearm?

You won't always have a box the right size for a firearm on hand. In a pinch, you can wrap the firearm in an old case, cover it with paper, and tie it up. Another option is to cut up several cardboard boxes and tape them together so the firearm fits inside.

The most professional solution, however, is to source a proper box. A quick Google search for where to order cardboard boxes will help. We found this supplier, for example: Ratioform.

How are freely tradeable firearms shipped?

Freely tradeable firearms are not subject to the same restrictions as "live firearms". Whether they may be shipped depends on the general terms and conditions of the respective logistics company.

The terms and conditions of DHL, for example, permit the shipping of freely tradeable firearms (Can I ship a firearm via DHL?).
