Firearms may be shipped, but only under certain conditions. Here you'll find out what legal requirements you need to follow and how to pack your firearm safely.

What do I need to consider legally when shipping?

Under § 34 Para. 1 Waffengesetz, the seller of a licensed firearm must ensure that it is only handed over to the authorized recipient. When shipping, this is only possible through identity verification of the recipient by the contracted carrier.

The terms and conditions of many shipping companies exclude the transport of firearms — so check in advance whether your provider allows it. We recommend using the market leader OVERNITE for shipping. After booking, the courier will collect the package on weekdays by appointment and deliver it to the recipient, who will be notified in advance and must be present in person to accept the delivery.

Can I ship a firearm and ammunition together?

No. For safety reasons, firearms and ammunition must always be shipped separately — never in the same package.

How do I pack a firearm?

The package must give no outward indication of its contents — so never write "firearm" or anything similar on the box, and be careful with labels too (better to use "Company X" than "Gun Shop X"). Pack the firearm in a sturdy container that cannot be easily opened, and protect it with filling and padding material.

Where can I get a suitable box?

Boxes in firearm size are rarely on hand. If necessary, the firearm can be placed in an old case and wrapped in paper, or you can tape several boxes together to fit. Your best bet is to source a suitable box — a quick search online will help, for example from a packaging supplier like Ratioform.

How are unrestricted firearms shipped?

Unrestricted firearms are not subject to the same restrictions as licensed firearms. Whether they may be shipped depends on the terms and conditions of the respective logistics company. DHL, for example, permits the shipping of unrestricted firearms — if in doubt, check directly with your provider.
