The U.S. Cavalry Saber Model 1906 (M1906) was a prototype of the U.S. Army and represented an evolution of the older Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber. It was manufactured by the Ames Sword Company and tested starting in 1906. However, the model was only in use for a short time and was eventually replaced by the Model 1913 Cavalry Saber. (americansocietyofarmscollectors.org)

Typical features of the M1906:

  • Curved blade similar to the M1860.
  • Steel hilt (instead of the brass hilt of the M1860).
  • Steel scabbard with closely spaced carrying rings.
  • Blade marking often “A.S.Co. 1906” with ordnance flame bomb. (americansocietyofarmscollectors.org)

For collectors, the M1906 is interesting because it is relatively rare. It is often mentioned in collector circles that only about 1,000–1,300 specimens were produced for troop trials.

(americansocietyofarmscollectors.org)

Typische Merkmale des M1906:

  • Gebogene Klinge ähnlich dem M1860.
  • Stahlgefäß (statt des Messinggefäßes des M1860).
  • Stahlscheide mit enger zusammenliegenden Tragringen.
  • Klingenmarkierung häufig „A.S.Co. 1906“ mit Ordnanz-Flammenbombe. (americansocietyofarmscollectors.org)
