The Hornady Critical Defense is a pistol cartridge designed for the finishing shot, favoring instant effect and rapid expansion behavior. Designed for compact and subcompact pistols, this cartridge is suitable for lightweight pistols for everyday hunting. It was developed for the demands of modern self-defense, but it is also excellent for the finishing shot on most game, especially foxes and roe deer.
The FTX bullet features the patented FlexTip bullet tip, which prevents clogging of the hollow point. This allows the bullet to achieve its full effect even when passing through dense animal hair or thick hide. Since the jacket and core are not connected, the bullet reacts quickly and has a high energy transfer and low residual weight.
The casing is nickel-plated, which not only increases the corrosion resistance of the casing - important for a cartridge that is loaded in the weapon under all weather conditions but rarely fired - but also enhances visibility under poor light conditions, which is advantageous when a loading check is performed before entering the thicket. Finally, the powder is a special formulation for low muzzle flash, ensuring that visibility is not disturbed by the muzzle fire even in low light.

Die Hornady Critical Defense ist eine Pistolenpatrone mit für den Fangschuss welche Augenblickswirkung und rasantes Aufpilzverhalten favorisiert. Ausgelegt für kompakte und subkompakte Pistolen ist diese Patrone geeignet für leichte Pistolen für den jagdlichen Alltag. Entwickelt wurde sie für die Anforderungen der modernen Selbstverteidigung, aber sie eignet sich dadurch hervorragend für den Fangschuss auf das meiste Wild, vor allem Fuchs und Rehwild.
Das FTX-Geschoss verfügt über die patentierte FlexTip Geschosspitze, welches ein verstopfen der Hohlspitze verhindert. Dadurch entfaltet das Geschoss seine volle Wirkung auch bei Schüssen durch dichtes Wildhaar oder eine dicke Schwarte. Da Mantel und Kern nicht miteinander verbunden sind, reagiert das Geschoss schnell und verfügt über eine hohe Energieabgabe und ein geringes Restgewicht.
Die Hülse ist nickelplatiert, was nicht nur die Korrosionsbeständigkeit der Hülse erhöht - wichtig bei einer Patrone, welche bei allen Wetterbedingungen in der Waffe verladen ist aber selten abgefeuert wird - sondern auch die Sichtbarkeit unter schlechten Lichtbedingungen erhöht, was von Vorteil ist, wenn vor dem Gang durch das Dickicht eine Ladekontrolle erfolgt. Schlussendlich ist das Pulver eine spezielle Laborierung für wenig Mündungsblitz, wodurch die Sehfähigkeit auch bei schlechtem Licht nicht durch das Mündungsfeuer gestört wird.

Aufgrund von Produktionsengpässen kann die aktuelle Produktion unter Umständen OHNE vernickelte Hülsen ausgeliefert werden. Wenn die Patronen über eine blanke Messinghülse verfügen, ist das daher kein Defekt.
