Diamond Like Carbon, or DLC for short, is 40 times thinner than a human hair but many times harder than steel. This high-tech coating, produced in Germany and used in aerospace, mechanical engineering, and even surgery, combines absolute wear resistance, hardness, and corrosion resistance. The steel is bombarded in a high vacuum under plasma with carbon atoms, so that the energy released causes the carbon to transition into a very hard, diamond-like phase.
