The SFL series from Zeiss guarantees absolute top optics in a lightweight, compact, and robust design, just as hunters wish to have their binoculars with them during the hunt. The SFL in the name stands for "SmartFocus" and "Lightweight." The previous x30 and x40 models have enjoyed great popularity since their establishment. Now, Zeiss presents 3 versions with a 50-mm objective lens, which maintain the compact design of 42-mm instruments. The SFL 12x50 is the binocular with the strongest magnification in the series and is therefore particularly suitable for hunting in open areas and observing wildlife at great distances.
The optical system
The very good optical performance of the SFL 12x50 is due to Zeiss's UHD concept. "Ultra High Definition" guarantees a true-to-nature reproduction of colors through optimal tuning of the optical design and lens coatings. A transmission value of 90% allows for observation until late twilight. The large exit pupil ensures comfortable viewing behavior. The close focus limit is only 1.8 m. The lenses naturally feature T* coating and LotuTec technology. The Schmidt-Pechan roof prisms and ED glasses (Extra Low-Dispersion) minimize chromatic aberration, and the SFL 12x50 exhibits almost no imaging errors. The field of view is still 105 m at 1,000 m despite the 12-fold magnification.
The ergonomics
The "SmartFocus" concept stands for the ergonomically perfect position of the large focusing wheel. This prevents overstretching of the finger when adjusting. With just 1.4 turns, you can switch from close focus to infinity. Fast and precise focusing is still possible even when the cold season requires wearing gloves during the hunt. The center of gravity of the SFL 12x50 is shifted towards the eyepiece, which balances the weight in the hand and allows for longer observation without fatigue. The completely removable eyecups are made of soft rubber and are adjustable in 5 positions.
The housing
The low weight of 872 g for a 12x50 binocular and the compact size with a length of only 160 mm, which is usually only found in 42 mm models, are made possible by a lightweight yet durable magnesium housing and thinner lens elements placed at a smaller distance. These construction principles do not affect the performance of the instrument. In addition to the robust housing, the armor made of natural rubber, a latex-free NBR mixture, provides additional protection. The housing is filled with nitrogen to prevent internal fogging and is waterproof up to 400 mbar. The SFL 12x50 can be used in a temperature range of -20 °C to 55 °C. It features an interface for the tripod adapter included with this 12x model, which allows for comfortable observation on a tripod with absolutely stable images.

Nun präsentiert Zeiss 3 Ausführungen mit einem 50-mm-Objektiv, die dabei die kompakte Bauweise von 42-mm-Instrumenten haben. Das SFL 12x50 ist in der Reihe das Fernglas mit der stärksten Vergrößerung und eignet sich deshalb besonders für die Jagd auf einem offenen Areal und zur Beobachtung von Wild auf große Distanzen.
Das optische System
Die sehr gute optische Leistung des SFL 12x50 verdankt sich dem UHD-Konzept von Zeiss. „Ultra High Definition“ garantiert eine naturgetreue Wiedergabe der Farben durch optimale Abstimmung des Optikdesigns und der Linsenbeschichtungen. Ein Transmissionswert von 90 % erlaubt den Ansitz bis in die späte Dämmerung. Die große Austrittspupille sorgt dabei für ein komfortables Einblickverhalten. Die Naheinstellgrenze beträgt nur 1,8 m. Bei den Linsen sind selbstverständlich die T*-Vergütung und die LotuTec-Technologie zum Einsatz gekommen. Die Schmidt-Pechan-Dachkantprismen und die ED-Gläser (Extra Low-Dispersion) minimieren die chromatische Aberration, das SFL 12x50 weist nahezu keine Abbildungsfehler auf. Das Sehfeld beträgt trotz der 12-fachen Vergrößerung noch 105 m auf 1.000 m.
Die Ergonomie
Das „SmartFocus“-Konzept steht für die ergonomisch perfekte Position des großen Fokussierrads. Dies verhindert das Überstrecken des Fingers beim Einstellen. Mit nur 1,4 Umdrehungen lässt sich von der Naheinstellung zu unendlich wechseln. Das schnelle und präzise Fokussieren gelingt auch noch, wenn die kalte Jahreszeit das Tragen von Handschuhen während der Jagd nötig macht. Der Schwerpunkt des SFL 12x50 ist zum Okular hin verlagert, was das Gewicht in der Hand ausbalanciert verteilt und auch längeres Beobachten ohne Ermüdung möglich macht. Die komplett abnehmbaren Augenmuscheln sind aus weichem Gummi und in 5 Positionen einstellbar.
Das Gehäuse
Das für ein 12x50-Glas geringe Gewicht von 872 g und die kompakte Größe mit einer Länge von nur 160 mm, die man sonst nur bei 42er Modellen hat, sind durch ein leichtes und dennoch langlebiges Magnesiumgehäuse sowie durch dünnere und in geringerem Abstand platzierte Linsenelemente möglich geworden. Diese Konstruktionsprinzipien beeinflussen dabei nicht die Leistung des Instruments. Neben dem robusten Gehäuse bietet die Armierung aus Naturkautschuk, einer Latexfreien NBR-Mischung, weiteren Schutz. Das Gehäuse ist gegen ein Beschlagen von innen mit Stickstoff gefüllt und es ist wasserdicht bis 400 mbar. Das SFL 12x50 kann in einem Temperaturbereich von -20 °C bis 55 °C eingesetzt werden. Es besitzt eine Schnittstelle für den bei diesem 12x-Modell im Lieferumfang enthaltenen Stativadapter, der ein komfortables Beobachten auf dem Stativ mit absolut ruhigen Bildern erlaubt.
