The SFL 12x50 binoculars from Zeiss deliver sharp and detailed images at long distances with their strong magnification.The SFL series from Zeiss guarantees absolute top optics in a lightweight, compact, and robust design, just as hunters wish to have their binoculars with them during the hunt. The SFL in the name stands for "SmartFocus" and "Lightweight." The previous x30 and x40 models have enjoyed great popularity since their establishment. Now, Zeiss presents 3 versions with a 50-mm objective lens, which maintain the compact design of 42-mm instruments. The SFL 12x50 is the binocular with the strongest magnification in the series and is therefore particularly suitable for hunting in open areas and observing wildlife at great distances.The optical systemThe very good optical performance of the SFL 12x50 is due to Zeiss's UHD concept. "Ultra High Definition" guarantees a true-to-nature reproduction of colors through optimal tuning of the optical design and lens coatings. A transmission value of 90% allows for observation until late twilight. The large exit pupil ensures comfortable viewing behavior. The close focus limit is only 1.8 m. The lenses naturally feature T* coating and LotuTec technology. The Schmidt-Pechan roof prisms and ED glasses (Extra Low-Dispersion) minimize chromatic aberration, and the SFL 12x50 exhibits almost no imaging errors. The field of view is still 105 m at 1,000 m despite the 12-fold magnification.The ergonomicsThe "SmartFocus" concept stands for the ergonomically perfect position of the large focusing wheel. This prevents overstretching of the finger when adjusting. With just 1.4 turns, you can switch from close focus to infinity. Fast and precise focusing is still possible even when the cold season requires wearing gloves during the hunt. The center of gravity of the SFL 12x50 is shifted towards the eyepiece, which balances the weight in the hand and allows for longer observation without fatigue. The completely removable eyecups are made of soft rubber and are adjustable in 5 positions.The housingThe low weight of 872 g for a 12x50 binocular and the compact size with a length of only 160 mm, which is usually only found in 42 mm models, are made possible by a lightweight yet durable magnesium housing and thinner lens elements placed at a smaller distance. These construction principles do not affect the performance of the instrument. In addition to the robust housing, the armor made of natural rubber, a latex-free NBR mixture, provides additional protection. The housing is filled with nitrogen to prevent internal fogging and is waterproof up to 400 mbar. The SFL 12x50 can be used in a temperature range of -20 °C to 55 °C.
