Das "I" stand bei dieser Patrone für "Infanterie" und "S" steht für Spitzgeschoß. Da die neuentwickelte Patrone ausschließlich für die Jagd ausgelegt war, wurde diese auch mit dem Buchstaben "J" gekennzeichnet, somit wird diese Patrone auch unter der Bezeichnung 8x57 "IS" und "JS" geführt, was im gleichen Maße richtig ist.
