The 8 mm Mauser was adopted by the German army in 1888 and in the following years by a number of countries such as Czechoslovakia, Poland, and China. The designation "Mauser" is actually a misnomer, as the cartridge was developed by a German military commission at the Spandau arsenal for a predecessor of the famous Mauser rifle that was introduced in 1898. The "J" in the name stands for "infantry." The designation "J" is based on a mistake that can be traced back to the earlier use of Gothic letters in Germany and has no significance for the bullet size. However, in 1905, the German army switched from round 226-grain bullets to a pointed 154-grain boat tail bullet, and at the same time, the diameter of the bullet was changed from .318" to the current standard of .323".
