Blackthorn is widespread throughout Ireland and everywhere on the British Isles. For centuries, it was considered a valuable material for making top-quality walking sticks. The original sticks carved from blackthorn were known as Irish shillelaghs. These traditional weapons of the rural population of Ireland were about 60 to 120 cm long. In skilled hands, the shillelagh was so devastating as a weapon that it was legally banned by the British occupiers. Subsequently, the Irish turned their shillelagh into a walking stick about 90 cm long, thus circumventing the law. Since another ban on walking sticks seemed inappropriate, the English allowed the Irish to keep them. Schlehdorn oder Schwarzdorn (engl. blackthorn) ist in ganz Irland und ĂĽberall auf den Britischen Inseln verbreitet.
Jahrhundertelang galt er als wertvolles Material zur Herstellung von erstklassigen Gehstöcken. Die ursprünglichen, aus Schwarzdorn geschnitzten Stöcke waren sogenannte irische Shillelaghs.
Diese traditionellen Waffen der ländlichen Bevölkerung Irlands waren etwa zwischen 60 und 120 cm lang.
In geübten Händen als Waffe eingesetzt war der Shillelagh so verheerend, dass er von den britischen Besatzern gesetzlich verboten wurde.
Daraufhin machten die Iren aus ihrem Shillelagh einen ca. 90 cm langen Wanderstock und konnten somit das Gesetz umgehen.
Da ein weiteres Verbot von Spazierstöcken unangemessen schien, ließen die Engländer die Iren gewähren.
