König Leonidas der, wie in Sparta üblich, seit seinem siebten Lebensjahr auf das Leben als Soldat gedrillt wurde wirft sich mit 300 Freiwilligen seiner Landsleute, ohne politische Unterstützung der Mächtigen Griechenlands, bei den Thermopylen der Phalanx den Persern entgegen. Im Film, der auf der Schlacht von Thermopylae basiert, werden die Spartaner mit ihren charakteristischen Kurzschwertern, den sogenannten Xiphos, dargestellt. Diese Schwerter waren für den Nahkampf konzipiert und zeichneten sich durch ihre Klinge und Handhabung aus.
