The 5.6x50 R Magnum is ideally suited for hunting roe deer due to its high instantaneous effect. Die Patrone ist zudem sehr gut für die Jagd auf Fuchs, Ansitzhase, sowie Auerhahn und Birkhahn einsetzbar. Diese hochpräzise Patrone lässt sich jagdlich auch über die 200-Meter-Grenze hinaus einsetzen. Entwickler der 1968 eingeführten Patrone ist Ing. G. Frères, der eine besonders für die Jagd auf Rehwild geeignete Patrone schaffen wollte. Die 5,5x50 Magnum ist in etwa mit der .222 Rem. Mag. oder .223 Rem. vergleichbar. Es handelt sich dabei im Wesentlichen um eine um 7 mm verlängerte .222 Rem.
