Die Stärken der Patrone liegen in der hohen Universalität, der hohen Eigenpräzision und dem angenehmen Schussverhalten. Aufgrund der hohen Präzision der .308 Win. ist sie auch bestens für das sportliche Schießen auf weite Distanzen geeignet. Die Patrone löste in den USA die .30-06 Springfield als Ordonnanzpatrone ab und auch die NATO hat diese Patrone übernommen. Als Zivilpatrone war sie nahezu zeitgleich erhältlich. Die .308 Win. ist neben der Verwendung in Repetierern auch hervorragend für Selbstladebüchsen geeignet.
