The 8x57 JS is a top-class cartridge for distances of up to around 180 m. It is ideal for hunting in the forest and as a driven hunt cartridge. Furthermore, it is a top-class big game cartridge for Central European game. It is also very popular there as a universal cartridge. Außerdem ist sie eine erstklassige Hochwild-Patrone für mitteleuropäisches Wild. Sie wird dort auch sehr gerne als universelle Patrone eingesetzt. Mit ihr hat man in der Regel geringere Hämatombildung zu verzeichnen als mit rasanten, schwächeren Kalibern. Die 8x57 JS wurde aus der alten Militärpatrone 8x57 I durch Vergrößerung des Geschossdurchmessers von .318" auf .323" (8,08 / 8,20 mm) entwickelt und erhielt ein S in der Bezeichnung.
