Scope mounts at a glance

Gunfinder Magazine

In addition to the gun itself, scopes are probably one of the most important aids today for hunting successfully with a bullet, or for practicing the shooting sport successfully.

Strictly speaking, it is the combination of a precise weapon and powerful optics that ensures this success. Both are connected by the so-called scope mount. Over the years, however, not only one type of mount for rifle scopes has prevailed, but many different systems could prove themselves for different types of weapons and rifle scopes, as well as for different types of use.

Among the most well-known types of mounts for rifle scopes nowadays are the EAW mount, the Picatinny rail, the Hexalock mount as well as the Blaser saddle mount . These different types of mounts also rely on different links between the optic and the rifle. Whereas the EAW swivel mount, for example, usually uses two mounting rings to mount the scope, the Picatinny rail, as the name suggests, relies on a system where two rails are mounted on top of each other using screw clamps. However, there are also other different types of mounts, some of which make use of elements of other types of mounts in combination.

As already mentioned, the mounting types can also be chosen depending on the occasion of use. For example, the Picatinny rail mount is considered to be very modular and quick to mount, while the EAW mount is said to be very robust and precise.

Which mount type you use is not always up to you. Often, a mounting type is predetermined by the design of the gun selected by the manufacturer. If you order the gun new from the factory, some manufacturers even allow you to choose a mounting variant.

If you buy a used gun, you usually have to live with the fact that the mounting type is predetermined. Here it is now important that one pays attention with the acquisition of a, possibly also used, rifle scope to the fact that the rifle scope is compatible with this mounting type.

The various mounts also differ greatly in terms of cost in some cases.

So to find the right mount for you and your rifle, you have to consider a few factors. Mostly you discover over the years by trying out many different types, which mount you like and why.

On Gunfinder.com you can not only get more information about rifle scopes. You can also search for mounts or mount parts and compare them.
