Scian by Tod Cutler – Historically inspired replica of an Irish precursor to the dirk
The Scian is considered a precursor to the modern dirk and was carried as a side knife by Gallowglass in the 16th century. This replica by Tod Cutler features a 39 cm long, up to 3 cm wide blade made of high-quality spring steel. The typical forge mark of Tod Cutler lends authenticity to the piece and confirms its craftsmanship of the highest quality.
During the 14thC to 16thC, Irish Medieval warriors carried a dagger type commonly called a Skain/Skean which translates from Gaelic as 'knife'. Long, single edged and simple, these fearsome daggers were to be found in the hands of some of the most fearsome warriors of Medieval Europe.
These long single-edged daggers are described and depicted in artwork but very few survived as original pieces and of course the classic dagger of the feared Gallowglass mercenaries
The light wooden handle is about 10 cm long, equipped with a disc-shaped brass guard and a brass cap that is also riveted to the blade. This lightweight and fast knife weighs only 325 grams and impresses with its balanced design. The decorated green leather sheath with carrying loops elegantly completes the overall picture.
The blade has been sharpened by the seller for cutting ability. Please note that this is only possible with age verification for shipping due to safety reasons.
