Im März 1982 reichte der österreichische Ingenieur und Unternehmer Gaston Glock die Prototypen B1 bis B5 seiner Schlagbolzenschlosspistole mit dem Kunststoffgriffstück zur Erprobung durch das Bundesheer ein. Die Streitkräfte der Alpenrepublik suchten seinerzeit eine neue Dienstpistole, die unter der Bezeichnung „Pistole P80“ projektiert war.
