Smith & Wesson Brands Inc. is North America's largest manufacturer of firearms, based in Springfield (Massachusetts). The company was founded in 1852 by business partners Horace Smith and Daniel Baird Wesson under the name Smith & Wesson, Norwich, Connecticut.
After the partnership began in 1852, Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson developed and patented a magazine pistol. The timing of the development of cartridge revolvers proved to be favorable, as the Civil War, which broke out five years later, created a strong demand for "Smith & Wesson" products. After the end of the Civil War, Smith & Wesson established itself in the civilian market with its Model No. 3. In 1964, the Wesson family sold the company to the conglomerate Bangor Punta. In 1984, this conglomerate, and thus also Smith & Wesson, was acquired by the Lear Siegler Corporation. Subsequently, Smith & Wesson refocused on its core business, and activities in other sectors were abandoned. Since the 1850s, the partners Smith & Wesson have primarily manufactured firearms (revolvers, pistols) and ammunition. Later, a wide range of equipment for police and other security forces was added. Smith & Wesson products are considered high quality in terms of quality, safety, accuracy, and durability.
By the end of the 19th century, Smith & Wesson began developing revolvers with a one-piece closed frame and a fixed barrel. One of the reasons was the introduction of ammunition with smokeless powder and higher ballistic performance. The result was the still-manufactured revolver with a side-swinging cylinder, as developed by Colt in 1884. To reload, the cylinder was swung out.
The Smith & Wesson Model 36 (also known as the Chiefs Special) is a revolver for .38 Special. It is one of several models of J-frame revolvers. It was introduced in 1950 and is still in production in the classic Blued Model 36 and the stainless steel Model 60. The Model 36 was designed in the era shortly after World War II. For the Model 36, S+W aimed to design a revolver that could fire the less powerful (compared to .38 Long Colt or the .38 S&W) .38 Special. Since the older I-frame could not handle this load, a new frame was designed, which became the J-frame. The new design was presented in 1950 at the Convention of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and was well received. A vote was held on the new revolver, and the name "Chiefs Special" won.

Smith & Wesson-Produkte gelten im Hinblick auf Qualität, Sicherheit, Genauigkeit und Haltbarkeit als hochwertig.
Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts begann Smith & Wesson mit der Entwicklung von Revolvern mit einteiligem geschlossenen Rahmen und fest eingeschraubtem Lauf. Einer der Gründe war die Einführung von Munition mit rauchlosem Pulver und höherer ballistischer Leistung. Das Resultat war der noch immer hergestellte Revolver mit seitlich ausschwenkbarer Trommel, wie er auch von der Firma Colt 1884 entwickelt wurde. Zum Nachladen wurde die Trommel ausgeschwenkt.
Das Smith & Wesson Modell 36 (auch bekannt als Chiefs Special) ist ein Revolver für .38 Special. Es ist eines von mehreren Modellen von J-Frame-Revolvern. Es wurde 1950 eingeführt und ist immer noch in der Produktion im klassischen Blued Model 36 und dem Edelstahlmodell 60. Das Modell 36 wurde in der Ära kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entworfen. Für das Modell 36 versuchte S+W, einen Revolver zu entwerfen, der den leistungsschwächeren (im Vergleich zu .38 Long Colt oder dem .38 S&W) .38 Special abfeuern konnt. Da der ältere I-Rahmen diese Last nicht bewältigen konnte, wurde ein neuer Rahmen entworfen, der zum J-Rahmen wurde. Es wurde eine Abstimmung über den neuen Revolver abgehalten, und der Name "Chiefs Special" gewann.
