Early in World War II, Smith-Corona, with the help of Remington Arms and the High Standard Manufacturing Company, switched from manufacturing typewriters to the Model 1903 A3 Springfield Rifles. Smith-Corona produced a total of 234,580 rifles during the war.
The M1903 Springfield, officially the United States Rifle, is an American five-shot bolt-action rifle that was primarily used in the first half of the 20th century. It was officially adopted on June 19, 1903, as the military standard rifle of the United States and served in World War I.
It was later replaced by the faster-firing semi-automatic eight-shot M1 Garand starting in 1936. However, the M1903 Springfield continued to see service during World War II. It was also used as a sniper rifle from 1936 to 1975 in World War II, the Korean War, and even the Vietnam War.
