Our territory in January

Gunfinder Magazine

Remember: the fox barks in January, the huntsman does it all year round! Full moon, maybe a little new and hoarse barking. A perfect mood to go after the redcoat's bellows. In quiet corners of the hunting ground, you can see them even in the best rifle light. Existing snow makes it easier to check the den and offers good opportunities when working with the groundhound. However, a shot fox not only brings a nice bellow, but is also an important part of our active species protection and prevents mange, rabies and fox tapeworm.

The acorn and beech mast in the forest is significantly reduced and the wild boar is now a more frequent guest at the feeding stations. Those who make use of the change to the feeding stations instead of sitting directly at the feeding garbage can by means of a permanent hide will also be successful in the long term. A feeding station is not a feeding place and is only intended to attract game. We therefore take care not to let a feeding station get out of hand and artificially drive up the population. Wild boar are also happy to use the feeding stations at the end of the hunting season.

In small game districts with pheasant and partridge populations, the feeders are loaded now at the latest. Grain such as wheat or even threshing waste is readily accepted. It is important to make sure that you have chosen a good location beforehand. This is particularly important to protect them from raptors and other predators. "Tight on top, light on the bottom" is a maxim that still applies to us.

High snow levels also pose major problems for our small game. Brown hares love soft wood. The bark is extremely nutritious and provides a good supplement. Willow, aspen and apple wood offered in November is supplemented if necessary. Hardwoods and conifers are rather unsuitable and are not accepted.

Extended hunting seasons still offer the opportunity to hunt roe deer. However, if you haven't managed to do so yet, you should leave the bullet in the barrel in January and start early in the next hunting year instead. Our game now needs to rest during the metabolic low.
