Rare double-barrel socket bayonet (Dillen bayonet) for shotgun (cross shotgun). 19th century. Manufacturer unknown.
Double-barrel socket or Dillen bayonets are known from France. They were used there in the mid-19th century for hunting and in the navy. The specific type of close combat on the wooden decks of warships at that time makes the use of shotguns, pistols loaded with shot, and corresponding bayonets seem very likely.
With an overall length of about 552 mm, the double Dillen bayonet presented here belongs to the socket bayonets common in the mid-19th century, as they were mounted on single-barreled muskets in many countries. Doppellauf Tüllen- oder Dillenbajonette sind aus Frankreich bekannt. Dort wurden sie Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bei der Jagd und bei der Marine verwandt. Die spezielle Art des Nahkampfes auf den hölzernen Decks der damaligen Kriegsschiffe, lässt die Verwendung von Schrotflinten, mit Schrot geladenen Pistolen und dazu passenden Bajonetten als sehr wahrscheinlich erscheinen.
Mit einer Gesamtlänge von ca. 552 mm zählt das hier vorliegende Doppeldillenbajonett zu den Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts üblichen Tüllenbajonetten, wie sie in vielen Staaten auf die einläufigen Musketen aufgepflanzt wurden.
