We acquired the weapon at a police auction in Zimbabwe in the early 1980s. It was taken from a poacher. As can be seen in the pictures, it has been repaired several times since production and has likely seen quite a bit of use. I did not find any decommissioning markings. There is a "Z" made of nails on the stock - like "Zimbabwe"? I can imagine that early hunters/adventurers (Frederick Courteney Selous? Cecil Rhodes?) brought the weapon as a trade item or gift to the region of present-day Zimbabwe/Zambia.
After some research, the weapon most closely resembles the Tower / Enfield Pattern from 1842, which were only converted to rifled barrels starting in 1854. However, the weapon is shorter than usual.

Wir haben die Waffe in den frühen 1980er Jahren in Simbabwe auf einer Polizeiauktion erworben. Wurde einem Wilderer abgenommen. Wie auf den Bildern zu sehen, wurde diese seit Produktion mehrmals repariert und hat wohl einiges an Einsatz gesehen. Ein Ausmusterungsbeschusszeichen habe ich nicht gefunden. Am Schaft ist ein "Z" aus Nägeln - wie "Zimbabwe"? Kann mir vorstellen dass die frühen Jäger/Abenteuerer (Frederick Courteney Selous? Cecil Rhodes?) die Waffe als Tauschgegenstand bzw. Geschenk in die Region der heutigen Länder Simbabwe/Sambia mitgenommen haben.
Nach einiger Recherche entspricht die Waffe am ehesten dem Tower / Enfield Pattern von 1842, diese wurden erst ab 1854 auf gezogene Läufe umgestellt/umgerüstet. Allerdings ist die Waffe kürzer als üblich.
