Description
When the USA entered World War II in 1941, the capacities of the traditional firearms factories were far from sufficient. The US government therefore obligated consumer goods manufacturers to switch to war production. Before the war, Underwood Elliott Fisher produced world-famous typewriters and calculators. The precision machines and the experience of the workers were ideal for the production of the lightweight M1 Carbine.
Underwood became one of the most important primary producers and manufactured a total of 545,616 carbines until production stopped in May 1944 – which corresponds to nearly 9% of the total war production of all manufacturers. Underwood was so successful in metalworking that they even produced over 1.7 million barrels and supplied other well-known manufacturers (such as Quality Hardware or National Postal Meter).
The M1 Carbine was developed to close a fundamental tactical gap in the US infantry. For soldiers behind the front lines (mortar crews, radio operators, drivers, officers, and supply troops), the standard rifle M1 Garand was too heavy and unwieldy. The Colt M1911 pistol, on the other hand, was too inaccurate at distance. The M1 Carbine was extremely light at around 2.4 kg, agile, and thanks to the 15-round magazine, had high firepower at distances up to 270 meters (300 yards).
Weapons from the Underwood serial number range from late 1943/early 1944 were used directly in the major operations of 1944 – including the Normandy invasion (D-Day) and the costly battles in the Pacific War against Japan.
It comes from an inherited collection that I am gradually dissolving after careful consideration. It is not easy to part with these pieces, but they should go into the hands of people who appreciate their quality and history.
The rifle can of course be viewed and inspected on site by appointment. I place great value on transparency so you can personally verify the condition of the firearm.

Die US-Regierung verpflichtete daher Konsumgüter-Hersteller zur Kriegsproduktion. Underwood Elliott Fisher stellte vor dem Krieg weltbekannte Schreibmaschinen und Rechenmaschinen her. Die feinmechanischen Maschinen und die Erfahrung der Arbeiter waren ideal für die Produktion des leichten M1 Karabiners.
Underwood entwickelte sich zu einem der wichtigsten Primärproduzenten und stellte bis zum Produktionsstopp im Mai 1944 insgesamt 545.616 Karabiner her – das entspricht knapp 9 % der gesamten Kriegsproduktion aller Hersteller. Underwood war so erfolgreich in der Metallverarbeitung, dass sie sogar über 1,7 Millionen Läufe produzierten und damit andere bekannte Hersteller (wie z. B. Quality Hardware oder National Postal Meter) mitbelieferten.
Der M1 Karabiner wurde entwickelt, um eine fundamentale taktische Lücke in der US-Infanterie zu schließen Soldaten hinter den Frontlinien (Mörser-Crews, Funker, Fahrer, Offiziere und Nachschubtruppen) war das Standardgewehr M1 Garand zu schwer und unhandlich. Die Pistole Colt M1911 wiederum war auf Distanz zu ungenau. Der M1 Carbine war mit rund 2,4 kg extrem leicht, führig und besaß dank des 15-Schuss-Magazins eine hohe Feuerkraft auf Distanzen bis zu 270 Metern (300 Yards).
Waffen aus dem Underwood-Nummernkreis von Ende 1943/Anfang 1944 kamen direkt bei den großen Operationen des Jahres 1944 zum Einsatz – darunter die Invasion in der Normandie (D-Day) sowie die verlustreichen Kämpfe im Pazifikkrieg gegen Japan.
Sie stammt aus einer geerbten Sammlung, die ich nach reiflicher Überlegung nach und nach auflöse. Es fällt nicht leicht, sich von diesen Stücken zu trennen, jedoch sollen sie in die Hände Personen gelangen, die ihre Qualität und Geschichte zu schätzen wissen.
Das Gewehr kann nach vorheriger Terminvereinbarung selbstverständlich vor Ort besichtigt und begutachtet werden. Ich lege großen Wert auf Transparenz, sodass Sie sich persönlich vom Zustand der Waffe überzeugen können.
Der Preis ist Verhandlungsbasis. Allerdings bitte ich darum realistisch zu bleiben.
