The AKS-74U is built after the model of the AK-74 as a carbine. It has the typical dimensions and characteristics of a submachine gun. The U in the designation of the weapon stands for укороченный/“ukorotscheny” (“shortened”).
Notable is the conical muzzle flash suppressor, which is attached at the end of the barrel instead of a muzzle brake and serves as an intake chamber, preventing excessive recoil and revealing muzzle flash.
The weapon is used by vehicle crews, artillery teams, and the Speznas (Russian for “special unit”), such as the GRU and the ALFAs, who require a lightweight and compact weapon.

Die AKS-74U ist nach dem Vorbild der AK-74als Karabiner gebaut. Sie hat die typischen Maße und Eigenschaften einer Maschinenpistole. Das U in der Bezeichnung der Waffe steht für укороченный/„ukorotscheny“ („gekürzt“).
Auffallend ist der konischeMündungsfeuerdämpfer, der anstelle einer Mündungsbremse am Ende das Laufs angebracht ist und als Ansaugraum dient, was einen allzu starken Rückstoß und verräterisches Mündungsfeuer verhindert.
Die Waffe wird von Fahrzeugbesatzungen, Artilleriemannschaften und den Speznas (russisch für „Spezialeinheit“), wie der GRUund den ALFAs benutzt, die eine leichte und kleine Waffe benötigen.
