Nel 1983, Colt introdusse la Colt Mark IV/Serie 80 Government Model -.380 Auto. Questa pistola tascabile era simile nell’aspetto, ma non nel design, alla Colt M1911. L’evidente differenza estetica del Government Model .380 risiedeva nelle sue dimensioni ridotte di circa il 78% rispetto a quelle di una M1911 Government Model a grandezza naturale. Il Government Model .380 aveva una capacità di 7+1 colpi. Nel 1986, Colt introdusse una versione semplificata del suo .380 con canna, carrello e impugnatura accorciati, che conteneva due colpi in meno e la vendette con il nome di Mustang. Nel 1987, fu introdotta la versione Pocket Light, che aumentò la popolarità grazie al peso ridotto dell’arma.
