Introdotta da Remington nel 1962 come short magnum basato sulla custodia .375 H&H, questa è la cartuccia magnum più popolare e diffusa al mondo. Le ragioni sono abbastanza ovvie. Come tutte le cartucce corte magnum da 7 mm, la versione di Remington è una cartuccia da caccia grossa a tutto tondo molto fine che spara in modo piatto e offre un rinculo molto tollerabile. Il rinculo è un fattore molto decisivo per il grado di successo dei tiratori e il Remington Magnum da 7 mm offre tutto ciò che la maggior parte di noi può gestire senza alcuna pratica a riguardo.
Nessuno dei magnum corti da 7 mm differisce notevolmente dal .275 H&H Magnum apparso 50 anni prima del Remington Magnum da 7 mm. Il fatto che l’ultimo sia diventato il più riuscito è dovuto alla comparsa di polveri a combustione lenta dopo la seconda guerra mondiale e ai buoni e convenienti fucili messi a disposizione da Remington con il suo allora nuovo modello 700.
L’ampia varietà di proiettili disponibili in combinazione con le eccellenti capacità balistiche dei proiettili da .284” rende il 7 mm una buona scelta per quasi tutte le specie di selvaggina, ad eccezione del più grande in Africa.
