A metà degli anni ’70 il Royal Army Ordnance Corps acquistò circa 3.000 Walther PP in 22 LR per l’Ulster Defense Regiment, un Reggimento di fanteria che operava nell’Irlanda del Nord controllata dai britannici. Queste armi furono designate con il codice di L66A1 e descritte come PDW (Personal Defense Weapon – “arma di difesa personale”). A tutt’oggi la storia non è ancora chiara, apparentemente queste pistole erano usate per la difesa dei membri dell’UDR fuori servizio ed erano particolarmente popolari tra le “servicewomen”, nonché occasionalmente utilizzate per l’addestramento. Le L66A1 rientrano nel range matricolare da 41.693 a 45.088 (questa è la 43.530). Non hanno banchi di prova britannici. A differenza delle Walther commerciali non sono bancate a ULM e non hanno un codice con la data. Risultano invece bancate presso il banco di prova militare di Koblenz in Germania Ovest (un’aquila che sormonta il numero 129). Qualunque cosa fossero, le L66A1 sono state tutte usate piuttosto duramente. La maggior parte subì la FTR (Factory Through Repair), un processo di ricostruzione presso l’arsenale dell’esercito britannico. I percussori, spesso, sono stati sostituiti (indicandolo con una “P” punzonata sul carrello). L’FTR prevedeva anche la verniciatura in Suncorite, una lacca nera spessa, famosa per le sue proprietà cancerogene, come per la sua resistenza ai solventi. La L66A1 fu ritirata dal servizio negli anni ’80 e incredibilmente venduta sul mercato civile. Anche Dieter Marschall nel suo libro sulle pistole Walther indica la L66A1 come arma da difesa dell’Ulster Defense Regiments in Irlanda del Nord. Alcune, come questa, presentano l’attacco per l’anello del correggiolo. Canna e meccanica sono ottime, esternamente sono evidenti i segno d’uso e di porto tali da aver consumato il rivestimento in Suncorite.
