Nel 1938 i Mauser 1896 avevano già più di quarant’anni, fucili così lunghi non erano più adatti ad un conflitto “moderno”, che richiedeva una notevole mobilità. Si decise di accorciare la canna, come avevano già fatto i tedeschi, come avevano già fatto gli italiani, come avevano già fatto gli americani. Nacque pertanto il progetto del Mauser svedese modello 1938 o M/38. Prima di mettere in produzione i Mauser M/38, si provvide ad accorciare dei fucili modello 96, che mantenevano la manetta dell’otturatore dritta e che vennero denominati M/96-38. Questa operazione fu effettuata, nel periodo dal 1938 al 1940, su circa 30.000 fucili. Solo successivamente, dal 1942 al 1944, la produzione degli M/38 propriamente detti (quelli con la manetta dell’otturatore piegata) fu assegnata alla Husqvarna, per un totale di 60.000 fucili, e la stessa Husqvarna produsse, dal 1943 al 1944, 20.000 fucili M/96.

Questo proveniente da collezione, rientra nel primo lotto. E’ monomatricola e presenta il regolatore micrometrico della Metallverken Västerås. Il dischetto presenta le indicazioni di foratura 6,51 la canna, canna (2). In condizioni generali ottime, ha la brunitura originale, è monomatricola ed ha la sua cinghia.
