Die 9,3x74 R ist eine erstklassige Hochwild-Patrone für Kipplaufwaffen, egal ob Kipplaufbüchse, Bockbüchsdrilling, Drilling oder Doppelbüchse. In kombinierten Waffen wird sie gerne mit einer kleineren, Rehwild tauglichen Patrone (z. B. im Einstecklauf) geführt. Sie lässt sich gut aus leichten Waffen verschießen und wird vor allem als Drückjagd-Patrone in der Doppelbüchse oder dem Doppelbüchsdrilling geschätzt. Die 9,3x74 R ist als Schwesterpatrone der 9,3x62 zu sehen, mit der sie fast gleichzeitig um die Jahrhundertwende zum 20. Jahrhundert vorgestellt wurde. In der Leistung sind beide Patronen praktisch identisch.
