The cartridge 7.92 x 57 mm, also known as 8 x 57 IS "infantry pointed," was the standard rifle cartridge of the German military during both world wars. It is still in use as a hunting cartridge. The 8 x 57 IS differs from the 8 x 57 I by a 0.1 mm larger bullet diameter, which is marked by a black-painted ring groove at the primer. It replaced the cartridge M/88 (8 x 57 I "infantry") with full metal jacket round-nose bullet in 1904/1905.
