The infantry rifle 1889 of the Swiss designer Rudolf Schmidt replaced the predecessor system Vetterli starting in 1889. The associated cartridge 7.5 mm GP 90 and the further developed 7.5 × 55 mm Swiss (GP 11) were developed by Eduard Rubin. This is how the designation Schmidt-Rubin came about. The most prominent feature of this type of rifle is the straight-pull bolt, which allows for reloading with a strong but quick pull-push motion, similar to the Mannlicher system.
