Liquido denso, molto simile al miele di castagno, dal profumo intenso che può ricordare la liquirizia. Viene utilizzata come additivo nelle pasture per gli ungulati. Aggiunta a mais o fioccato ha un forte potere attrattivo. Diventa incredibile se utilizzata con i blocchi di foraggio Trophy Blocco. La melassa è un prodotto derivante dalla lavorazione della canna da zucchero, è il liquido bruno che si separa dallo zucchero per centrifugazione. Il termine melassa deriva dal portoghese melaço a sua volta dal latino mel che significa miele.
Esistono due tipi di melassa:
la melassa di canna, dalla cui fermentazione si ricava il rum e talvolta anche la vodka (ad esempio le vodke prodotte negli Stati Uniti e nei Caraibi); la melassa di barbabietola, usata per produrre lievito di birra e parte integrante dei mangimi animali (per bovini, cavalli, ecc.).
La melassa è una alternativa allo zucchero bianco (saccarosio). Fornisce circa il 30-40% di calorie in meno (apporta infatti 235 kcal ogni 100 g) ed ha una discreta concentrazione di sali minerali (calcio, magnesio e ferro) e tracce di vitamine (gruppo B, PP) per questo motivo diventa un utile apporto calorico e sostanzioso alla dieta degli ungulati durante i rigidi mesi invernali.
