Il Revolver Smith & Wesson 53 nasce in America come arma specifica per la caccia, ideata per soddisfare le esigenze dei cacciatori di nocivi; i quali richiedevano munizioni veloci e precise, (come la cartuccia .22 Harvey Kay-Chuck) che era derivata dal .22 Hornet e offriva una velocità alla bocca di 730 m/sec.
Dal punto di vista tecnico, il modello 53 è basato sul telaio “K” della Smith & Wesson, originariamente progettato per il .38 Special, ma modificato per ospitare la nuova cartuccia .22 Jet, ovvero una versione potenziata basata sul .357 Magnum.
La struttura del revolver è simile a quella del modello 19, con un tamburo ribaltabile lateralmente e una molla principale a lamina che spinge il cane.
La tensione della molla è regolabile, e il tamburo è vincolato in posizione di chiusura in due punti, garantendo una solida tenuta.
Un aspetto tecnico distintivo è la presenza di due percussori distinti, uno per le cartucce a percussione centrale (.22 Jet) e uno per quelle a percussione anulare (.22 LR).
Questi percussori sono selezionabili tramite un sistema che permette di cambiare rapidamente il tipo di munizione utilizzata.
La canna è caratterizzata da una rigatura di alta precisione e da una finitura brunita eccellente.
Durante la prova a fuoco, il modello 53 ha mostrato un’elevata precisione, con uno scatto liscio e morbido.
Al tempo emersero problemi pratici come la difficoltà nell’estrazione dei bossoli specialmente quando il tamburo si riscaldava, e questo, combinato con la necessità di una pulizia meticolosa delle camere, ha limitato il successo commerciale dell’arma. Nonostante questo il modello 53 è considerato un esempio di altissima qualità costruttiva della Smith & Wesson, con finiture curate e una precisione eccellente, rendendolo un pezzo ambito dai collezionisti e dagli appassionati di armi.
