Description

Savage builds the Axis 2 Pro around a cylindrical system that is machined from raw material. From the factory, the rifle is already equipped with a one-piece scope rail with 0 MOA cant. The bolt catch is located on the right side of the system, directly behind the ejection port. Savage uses its proven, screwed headspace system for mounting the 20-inch barrel of the Axis 2 Pro. These short barrels, equipped with a muzzle thread, are currently trending in centerfire hunting rifles as they are particularly well-suited for use with suppressors.

Compared to the original Savage Axis, the Axis 2 offers some notable improvements – particularly in the trigger and stock. All new Axis 2 rifles, including the Pro version, are equipped with Savage's popular and proven AccuTrigger. This is a user-adjustable trigger with a passive safety lever in the middle of the trigger guard. In the tested rifle, the trigger broke cleanly and precisely at 2.75 pounds (approximately 1.25 kg).

The new stock of the Axis 2 Pro resembles a hybrid solution – a mix of a precision rifle stock and a classic hunting stock. It features a high comb with a negative pitch angle, meaning the comb is lower at the front and rises towards the end of the stock. This has two advantages: Firstly, the recoil is perceived as more pleasant in the cheek area, as the stock glides past the face rather than hitting it hard. Secondly, the eye is better aligned with the scope while maintaining a stable cheek contact. Additional features include an almost vertical pistol grip and a textured surface on the grip and forend for better hold.

Savage baut das Axis 2 Pro um ein zylindrisches System herum, das aus Rohmaterial gefräst wird. Ab Werk ist das Gewehr bereits mit einer einteiligen Zielfernrohrschiene mit 0 MOA Vorneigung ausgestattet. Der Verschlussfang befindet sich auf der rechten Seite des Systems, direkt hinter dem Auswurffenster. Savage verwendet bei der Montage des 20-Zoll-Laufs des Axis 2 Pro ihr bewährtes, eingeschraubtes Headspace-System. Diese kurzen, mit einem Mündungsgewinde versehenen Läufe sind derzeit bei Zentralfeuerjagdgewehren im Trend, da sie sich besonders gut für den Einsatz mit Schalldämpfern eignen.

Im Vergleich zum ursprünglichen Savage Axis bietet das Axis 2 einige bemerkenswerte Verbesserungen – insbesondere beim Abzug und beim Schaft. Alle neuen Axis 2-Gewehre, einschließlich der Pro-Version, sind mit dem beliebten und bewährten AccuTrigger von Savage ausgestattet. Dabei handelt es sich um einen vom Benutzer einstellbaren Abzug mit einem passiven Sicherungshebel in der Mitte des Abzugsbügels. Beim getesteten Gewehr brach der Abzug sauber und präzise bei 2,75 Pfund (ca. 1,25 kg).

Der neue Schaft des Axis 2 Pro wirkt wie eine Hybridlösung – eine Mischung aus einem Präzisionsgewehrschaft und einem klassischen Jagdschaft. Er hat einen hohen Schaftrücken mit negativem Neigungswinkel, das heißt, der Schaftrücken ist vorne tiefer und steigt zum Schaftende hin an. Das hat zwei Vorteile: Zum einen wird der Rückstoß im Wangenbereich als angenehmer empfunden, da der Schaft eher am Gesicht vorbeigleitet, anstatt es hart zu treffen. Zum anderen wird das Auge besser in Linie mit dem Zielfernrohr gebracht, während gleichzeitig ein stabiler Wangenkontakt erhalten bleibt. Weitere Merkmale sind ein nahezu senkrechter Pistolengriff sowie eine strukturierte Oberfläche an Griff und Vorderschaft für besseren Halt.
