Why are search results sometimes not optimal?

Gunfinder is a search engine for firearms, accessories, and ammunition that aggregates listings from many sources. The quality of search results depends heavily on the data we receive — and that's where limitations sometimes arise.

Data quality: not every dealer provides equally good data

Some dealers supply their data in a structured format, with clear details on caliber, model, and manufacturer. Others don't offer a data feed — in those cases, we collect the information automatically from their websites, which is often less precise.

Missing structure leads to poorer results

When product information is incomplete or unstructured, it can lead to inaccurate matches. Caliber is a good example:

• If it only appears in the listing title rather than in a dedicated data field, our search may not process the information optimally.
• As a result, a caliber search might miss relevant matches — or return irrelevant ones.

What you can do

• Try different search terms and filter settings.
• Use alternative spellings or synonyms (e.g., ".308 Win" instead of "308 Winchester").
• If you can't find a product, it's possible the dealer carries it but hasn't submitted complete data.

Our goal: better data for better search
