Why are the search results sometimes not optimal?

Gunfinder is a search engine for firearms, accessories, and ammunition, collecting listings from many sources. How good the search results are depends heavily on the data we receive – and that’s exactly where there are sometimes limits.

Data quality: not every dealer delivers equally well

Some dealers provide us with their data in a structured way, with clear details on caliber, model, and manufacturer. Others don’t offer a data feed – then we automatically capture the information from their websites, which is often less precise.

Lack of structure leads to worse results

If product info is incomplete or unstructured, it can lead to inaccurate matches. One example is the caliber:

• If it only appears in the listing title and not in a dedicated data field, our search might not process the information optimally.
• This can cause relevant matches to be missing in a caliber search, or irrelevant ones to appear.

What you can do

• Try different search terms and filter settings.
• Use alternative spellings or synonyms (e.g. “.308 Win” instead of “308 Winchester”).
• If you can’t find a product, it might be that the dealer offers it but hasn’t fully submitted the data.

Our goal: better data for better search
