The SIG Sauer P226 pistol was designed by SIG to participate in the “XM9 Pistol Trials” tests held by the United States Army to replace the standard issue weapon until then, the Colt M1911. The choice was narrowed down to two candidates, the SIG Sauer P226 and the Beretta 92; although both were deemed suitable, the Beretta was preferred due to the lower cost of spare parts. However, the Navy SEALs, following the breakage of the slide on some M9 models, decided to adopt the P226. Derived from the previous P220, it largely retains the same characteristics and design. The SIG P226 adds some aesthetic and functional improvements; among the most notable are the presence of a double-stack magazine, with increased capacity up to 15 rounds, as well as a more efficient slide operation system.

Since the first success with adoption by the Swiss Army in 1975, Sig Sauer pistols have undergone continuous technological evolution that has kept them up to date.
