Der große Durchbruch der Beretta 92 kam 1985, als die US-Armee die italienische Pistole Beretta 92 FS als „M 9“ in Dienst stellte. Mit dem dazu erteilten Auftrag über 315.000 Waffen begann die Erfolgskarriere der gesamten Pistolenserie 92.
In unzähligen Test hat sich die Beretta 92 FS als extrem zuverlässig und haltbar erwiesen. Nach einem Dauerbeschusstest von 160.000 Schuss erwies sich das Leichtmetallgriffstück, Lauf und Verschluss als extrem haltbar. Durch ihre einfache Bedienbarkeit, kompromisslose Zuverlässigkeit und Haltbarkeit wurde sie in vielen Ländern der Welt als Dienstwaffe eigeführt.
Das Griffstück der 92 FS ist aus gehärtetem, geschmiedetem Leichtmetall gefertigt, während der Lauf und Verschluss aus gehärtetem Stahl besteht. Die Funktionssicherheit der 92 FS beruht auf der Beretta-typischen Konstruktion, dem patentierten „Open-Slide-Design“, das heißt der Verschluss ist vom Stossboden bis fast zum Korn oben und teilweise seitlich offen. Das bewirkt, dass das Risiko eines Hülsenklemmers so stark minimiert wird, dass diese Fehlerquelle in der Praxis fast auszuschließen ist.
Das Sicherungskonzept besteht aus einer Fallsicherung und einer manuellen, beidhändig bedienbaren Walzensicherung, die auf den Schlagbolzen wirkt und bei Betätigung auch den gespannten Hahn in die Ausgangsstellung zurückschnellen lässt. Ein Indikator direkt hinter der Auswurföffnung am rechten Verschlussbereich zeigt an, ob sich eine Patrone in der Patronenkammer befindet.
Der Magazinhalteknopf, der mit dem Daumen der Schusshand bequem zu betätigen ist, lässt sich für Linkshänder auf die rechte Waffenseite umstecken und macht die 92 FS zusammen mit dem beidseitig bedienbaren Sicherungshebel im Handumdrehen zu einer vollwertigen Linkshänder-Waffe. Das aus Stahlblech gefertigte Magazin nimmt die 15 Patronen in zwei Reihen auf.
