The main update concerns the mid-length gas operation system; the configuration of the integral free-floating handguard with M-Lok slots also changes. Compared to the second generation, the rifling twist rate remains the same (1:8"; it was 1:7" in the first) of the 406-millimeter threaded barrel, made of 4140 chrome-moly steel treated with a black Armornite finish; the receiver is aluminum, and the grip is polymer. Sette anni dopo la seconda e ben quattordici dopo la prima datata 2010, la Smith & Wesson ha deciso d'introdurre la terza versione della carabina semiautomatica M&P 15 Sport: accanto ci ha appiccicato l'ordinale III, a indicare la progressione cronologica nello sviluppo dei diversi modelli.
L'aggiornamento principale riguarda il sistema di funzionamento a presa di gas mid-length; cambia anche la configurazione del copricanna integrale free floating, con slot M-Lok. Rispetto alla seconda generazione re sta identico però il passo di rigatura (1:8"; nella prima era 1:7") della canna filettata lunga 406 millimetri, in acciaio 4140 al cromo-molibdeno trattato con una finitura nera Armornite; è in alluminio invece il fusto, e in polimero l'impugnatura
