Seven years after the second and a full fourteen after the first dated 2010, Smith & Wesson decided to introduce the third version of the M&P 15 Sport semi-automatic carbine: they added the ordinal III to indicate the chronological progression in the development of the different models.
The main update concerns the mid-length gas operation system; the configuration of the integral free-floating handguard with M-Lok slots also changes. Compared to the second generation, the rifling twist rate remains the same (1:8"; it was 1:7" in the first) of the 406-millimeter threaded barrel, made of 4140 chrome-moly steel treated with a black Armornite finish; the receiver is aluminum, and the grip is polymer.
