A 40 mm main tube looks like a clear selection criterion at first glance. However, for this barrel class, the nominal value alone is not enough. Stepped contours, electronics housings, and short straight clamping zones can exclude a mount, even though "40 mm" appears in both product names.
The SP-7602 is Spuhr’s solid, one-piece solution for a compatible 40 mm scope on MIL-STD-1913 or STANAG-4694 rail. It sets the optical axis rearward at 38 mm and tilts it by 6 MIL / 20.6 MOA. The datasheet explicitly assigns it to 56 mm objective classes, extended Picatinny rails, and night vision equipment.
40 mm is only the first fitting stage: Both straight barrel zones must also fit within the 32 mm wide rings, the 62 mm free space must fit the middle part of the optic, and the specific contour must be approved. Spuhr explicitly excludes the new IOR Terminator with stepped barrel and the first generation Swarovski dS.
Barrel contour before ring diameter
The rings may only clamp on straight, cylindrical 40 mm surfaces. Cone, step, turret block, or electronics housing do not belong under a ring. The SP-7602 offers 32 mm clamping surface per ring and 62 mm free space between them. This geometry determines whether eye relief and ring position can be achieved without overlapping an unsuitable contour.
The model-specific exclusion of the IOR Terminator with stepped barrel shows why the caliper is more important than the family designation. According to Spuhr, the Swarovski dS Gen1 is also not allowed. These notes cannot be bypassed by different torque, inserts, or a supposedly small position change.
User tip: Measure two clamping zones separately Mark the actually straight 40 mm areas on the scope in front of and behind the turret block. Each zone must fully accommodate the 32 mm ring width; between the rings, contour and middle part must fit into the 62 mm free space. Only then check if this position also provides the correct eye relief.
6 MIL are added to rail tilt
The mount does not increase the mechanical elevation adjustment range of the scope. It shifts the usable position within the existing range. On a neutral rail, a total of 6 MIL results. A rail already tilted by 3 MIL leads to 9 MIL, a 6 MIL rail to 12 MIL total tilt.
When zeroing, the scope must be able to compensate this sum in the opposite direction. A large elevation range on the datasheet does not automatically guarantee an achievable close zero because zero-stop, mechanical center, and actually remaining opposite travel limit the usable reserve.
Instructor tip: Decide tilt at desired zero point First set the shortest required zero point. Then add rail angle and 6 MIL mount angle and compare this sum to the actually usable opposite travel with zero-stop set. If the zero point is at the edge, a neutral 40 mm mount is more honest than extra reserve towards distant targets that are not needed in your own use.
Large objective does not automatically mean free rail
The 38 mm on tilted Spuhr mounts at the end
measured at the rear ring plane. With 6 MIL, the scope axis tilts forward approximately 0.6 mm per 100 mm distance. Therefore, less height is available directly under the objective than the title suggests.
If the widest point is 150 mm in front of the rear ring plane, the axis runs at 37.1 mm theoretically. With a 72 mm outer diameter, there is theoretically 1.1 mm clearance over a parallel, continuous rail. With a 74 mm outer diameter, only 0.1 mm remains, practically no reliable clearance.
At 180 mm distance, the axis is theoretically at 36.92 mm. A 72 mm housing allows 0.92 mm theoretical clearance there; a 74 mm housing would theoretically cut the parallel rail by 0.08 mm. Protective cap, tolerances, dirt, and safety margin are not yet considered in these numbers.
“56 mm objective” refers to the front lens, not the outer diameter of the housing. Therefore, the actual outer dimension including the used cap is measured at the point closest to the rail or weapon surface.
User tip: Don’t guess ring diameter if height is tight
Measure outer diameter and longitudinal distance on the specific scope. Subtract 0.6 mm per 100 mm distance from 38 mm, then subtract half the outer diameter. If less than the required safety margin remains, the geometry of the entire setup must be changed; tightening the mount more does not create space.
Front technology and accessories have two reference planes
Spuhr describes the SP-7602 as a mount for use with night vision equipment. This is a system design, not a blanket compatibility guarantee. A front device on the extended weapon rail follows its axis; the scope is tilted relative to it by 6 MIL. Permissible axis deviation, mounting, and position must be covered by the specific device.
The ISMS manual also separates accessory interfaces: attachments on the ring covers follow the scope axis. Interfaces on the mount body remain aligned to the rail or mounting surface. An accessory part therefore does not belong where there is a free screw surface, but to the reference plane required by its function.
The back of the supplied 10-degree wedge serves as a screw length gauge. Before mounting an interface part, it can be checked whether the screw is too long and would protrude toward the scope.
Fixed position without QD or cantilever
The 126 mm long body is designed for permanent screw clamping. It has neither quick-release lever nor offset. This makes sense if the scope stays permanently on the same weapon and the eye relief can be adjusted within a continuous rail.
On a system that requires the optic significantly further forward, a suitable cantilever solution is structurally cleaner. Those who regularly switch between weapons need a QD mount designed for that and must manage repeatability, rail position, and clamping force as a separate process.
The 38 mm axis fits especially well with straight chassis and adjustable cheek rests. On a low hunting stock, it can relieve cheek contact. The full field of view should appear in the natural hold without raising the head.
Construction and assembly sequence
The datasheet specifies a body made of 7075-T651 aluminum, hard anodized, seven interface sets, and an integrated bubble level. The diagonally split rings keep the view on elevation and windage turrets clear. Torx-20 ring and clamping screws are zinc-nickel coated and waxed at the factory.
When tightening, the mount is pressed forward against the rail system. The M5 clamping screws are first finger-tightened from the center outward and then tightened in the same order to 5 Nm. For the M4 ring screws, 2.0 Nm or the lower approved value of the optic manufacturer applies.
The 10-degree wedge r
Provides a suitable flat underside of the scope for the integrated bubble level. If the optic does not have an accessible flat surface there, the wedge must not be forced against a contour; in that case, another load-bearing leveling method is required.
Our assessment
The strongest reason to buy is the direct, adapter-free connection of a compatible 40 mm optic with a high and inclined ISMS platform. For large long-range optics with suitable tube geometry, this can be the mechanically cleanest solution.
The most important counterpoint is the low tolerance for error in selection. Nominal 40 mm is not enough, as the two explicit optic exclusions show. Additionally, the 6 MIL tilt on an already inclined rail can consume more counter-travel than the desired close zero point allows.
Black-Raptor short summary:
Buy if: the specific scope has approved straight 40 mm clamping zones, can be positioned in 32/62/32 mm ring geometry, and 38 mm height plus 6 MIL in the overall system are actually needed.
Do not buy if: only the nominal tube diameter is known, one of the manufacturer exclusions applies, the rail already provides enough tilt, objective clearance or close zero point become tight, or QD or forward offset are required.

FAQ
Does every scope with nominal 40 mm main tube fit? No. Straight clamping zones, ring position, and contour must fit. Spuhr explicitly excludes the new IOR Terminator with stepped tube and Swarovski dS Gen1.
Do 6 MIL increase the elevation adjustment range? No. The mount positions the existing adjustment range differently. The counter-adjustment range determines whether the desired close zero point remains achievable.
How is the total tilt calculated? Rail and mount are added: neutral plus 6 MIL equals 6 MIL, a 3 MIL rail totals 9 MIL, and a 6 MIL rail totals 12 MIL.
How much objective clearance remains with 72 mm outer diameter? At 150 mm distance from the rear ring plane, the axis is mathematically at 37.1 mm. Above a parallel continuous rail, this theoretically leaves 1.1 mm before cap, tolerances, and safety margin.
Is night vision technology automatically compatible? No. The mount is designed for this system environment. Front device, mount, rail axis, and permissible optical deviation must still specifically match.
When is the QDP-7002 the better alternative? When a compatible 40 mm scope should be mounted neutrally at the same height and regularly removed via a QD clamp designed for that purpose.

Spuhr ISMS · 40 mm · 6 MIL
Was die Konstruktion praktisch bewirkt
