With modular mounts, the most common wrong purchase isn’t the lever, but the top part. The base clamps cleanly onto the weapon rail, but without the right attachment, it doesn’t connect just any accessory to the system.
That’s exactly how the AD-170 should be classified: It creates the adjustable QD connection to the Picatinny rail. ADM names two direct applications and additionally the combination with suitable risers. So it’s a mounting base, not a complete riser and not a universal adapter.
The system boundary in one sentence: Picatinny rail → AD-170 with QD Auto Lock → SureFire-951-type light, DI Optical RV1 or explicitly compatible ADM attachment. The model designation of the attachment or riser must explicitly fit the AD-170.
Modular base instead of finished mount
The lower part handles quick clamping and releasing on the rail. The specific counterpart on top decides the function. In the direct configuration, the base serves according to ADM as a mount for a weapon light of the SureFire-951 type; the manufacturer also names the DI Optical RV1 as suitable.
For other tasks, the AD-170 takes suitable ADM risers. Only this combination creates, for example, a raised Picatinny level. Anyone wanting to use such a raise ready-made should choose the complete AD-170-VPG-Riser mount, instead of assembling base and needed attachment only by similarly sounding names.
The base itself contains neither light nor sight. It is a mechanical mounting component. Function, height, and compatibility of the finished setup therefore result from the actually mounted device or riser.
Why the AD-170 is not a bipod base
ADM lists the shorter AD-170-S as its own Bipod Base and names specific bipod interfaces there. The AD-170 without S offered here is instead the longer modular base for the light, RV1, and riser applications described above.
This model separation is decisive for purchase. A similar name is not enough to transfer the approvals of the AD-170-S to the AD-170. Anyone wanting to connect an Atlas, Magpul, or Harris system needs the explicitly designated bipod mount for that, not this base.
Setting QD Auto Lock on the rail
To open, press the locking button and move the standard lever 180 degrees to the open position. Then place the base on the rail and close the lever. The right tension is reached when the lever can be fully closed with strong hand pressure without forcing it.
If the tension is not right, the lever stays open. By pressing the lever toward the base, the adjustment nut on the opposite side protrudes. ADM recommends small steps of one to two wrench flats and checking again after each step. No special tool is needed for this; fingers or a flat screwdriver suffice according to the manufacturer.
A rail outside its nominal dimensions is not automatically damaged, and an adjustable lever does not make a damaged or unsuitable rail fit. The clamping surface must be clean, undamaged, and free of burrs. If the lever only closes with force or stays
after closing, play is reset instead of being pressed further.
Our assessment
The strongest reason to buy is the reuse of a proven ADM-QD base in a clearly planned modular design. Anyone who already owns the matching attachment or wants to implement one of the two direct manufacturer applications gets a lightweight, adjustable interface with a low standard lever.
The most common misconception is larger than the actual scope of delivery: The AD-170 is not automatically a rail riser and does not universally fit every light, optic, or bipod mount. With a specifically named Aimpoint Micro or Trijicon MRO footprint, the respective direct mount is simpler and involves fewer open interfaces.
Instructor tip: First determine the upper device
Start the selection with the device, not the lever. Note its exact model designation and the required mount. Only when the counterpart is explicitly AD-170 compatible is the position on the rail planned. This prevents a cleanly clamping base from ultimately carrying no suitable attachment.
User tip: Change clamping tension in small steps
Open the lever fully, press it to the base, and turn the protruding adjustment nut only one or two flats. Then close again on the same rail and check for play. Several small corrections are more controllable than one large adjustment.
User tip: Do not transfer ring torque to the base
The general ADM-QD manual also contains a value for ring screws. However, the AD-170 has no scope rings. For screws between base and attachment, only the specification of the specific attachment applies; a ring value would be the wrong reference here.
User tip: Make reassembly reproducible
When repeatedly removing, use the same rail slot and check the lever tension after closing. For optical use, the position must then be checked. A controlled point-of-impact check remains part of the process for optical use.
Black-Raptor short summary:
Buy if: one of the direct ADM applications or an explicitly suitable AD-170 riser is determined and the adjustable QD function is used regularly.
Do not buy if: a finished riser, a universal optic or light mount, an AD-170-S bipod base, or a rigid solution without change requirement is sought.
Suitable alternatives depending on the actual counterpart:
AD-170-VPG: complete Picatinny riser mount instead of individual base
Direct low QD mount for Aimpoint Micro T1/T2
Direct low QD mount for Trijicon MRO

FAQ
Is the AD-170 already a Picatinny riser? No. It is the QD base. An elevated Picatinny level only arises with an explicitly suitable riser. Anyone needing a finished riser should choose the complete AD-170-VPG version.
Can the base be used directly? Yes, but only in the direct applications named by ADM for SureFire 951 Type or DI Optical RV1. For an
For these tasks, a confirmed AD-170 counterpart is required.
Does the AD-170 fit an Atlas or Magpul bipod? These approvals are specified by ADM for the separate, shorter AD-170-S Bipod Base. They must not be applied to the AD-170 without the S.
Does the lever adjustment require a special tool? No. ADM describes the adjustment with fingers or a flat screwdriver. Small corrections and a recheck on the specific rail are crucial.
Does the QD lever also fit rails with dimensional deviations? According to the manufacturer, the clamping force is adjustable for both dimensionally accurate and deviating rails. Damage, burrs, or the wrong type of rail are not compensated by this.
Is the AD-170 the best choice for Aimpoint Micro or Trijicon MRO? Only if a confirmed AD-170 mount is part of the plan. For these clearly defined optic footprints, the respective ADM direct mounts are simpler and reduce additional interfaces.

QD-Basis statt Universaladapter
Was die AD-170 praktisch leistet
Kein fertiger Riser: Ohne passenden Aufbau oben entsteht keine erhöhte Picatinny-Ebene.
