Corrosion often doesn’t start with visible rust, but with moisture, hand sweat, and residues on an apparently clean metal surface. Simply applying oil over it mixes protection and lubrication – and an unnecessarily wet film quickly forms on external surfaces.
Shield XP is Bore Tech’s rust and corrosion protection for metal surfaces. According to the manufacturer, the formulation displaces moisture and leaves a dry to semi-dry, non-oily barrier. It is primarily intended for the outside of the firearm and is explicitly not a lubricant.

Protective film instead of a permanently damp surface
The manufacturer describes Shield XP as non-oily, non-greasy, and non-tacky. After application, the formulation is supposed to penetrate the metal surface, displace moisture, neutralize corrosive byproducts, and seal the surface against the environment with an invisible film. For firearms that need protection on the outside after rain, hunting use, hand sweat, or longer storage, this separation makes sense: protection where no sliding contact needs lubrication.
Bore Tech states that the protective film lasted more than 500 hours in an ASTM humidity test and more than 100 hours in an ASTM salt spray test. These are manufacturer test results, not a direct promise for a specific storage duration in your safe or hunting area. Humidity, salt exposure, pre-cleaning, coating uniformity, and renewed contact change the real protection situation.
The manufacturer’s site lists a single version with 4 fl oz in a treated HDPE bottle with pump sprayer. The spray head allows direct application; alternatively, Shield XP is applied to a cloth and wiped over the metal surface. A suitable clean cloth is not included.
Our assessment
The strongest reason to buy is the clean role as external corrosion protection. If you store a hunting or sport firearm after cleaning and drying, you can protect exposed metal surfaces without deliberately leaving an oily lubricant film. This is especially understandable on barrel exterior, receiver, and other touched metal surfaces.
The most common misconception comes from the term firearm care: Shield XP does not lubricate moving parts. For storage friction, guides, or other sliding contact points, Friction Guard XP is the more suitable oil layer. Where a dry sliding film is needed, QWIK-DRI serves a different function; for highly stressed contact points, Extreme Grease HD is an option.
According to Bore Tech, Shield XP may also be used inside the barrel as rust protection. This possibility does not make it a barrel cleaner. Fouling, oil, grease, and surface contamination must be removed before applying protection. Before shooting, always run a dry patch through the barrel to ensure no residues or obstacles remain.

Black-Raptor purchase limit: Buy if you want to protect clean external metal surfaces of a firearm against moisture, rust, and corrosive environments without leaving a permanently oily film. Don’t buy if you want to remove carbon, copper, or lead, lubricate moving t
rush lubrication, grease highly stressed contact points, or look for a universal CLP for cleaning, lubrication, and protection in one step.
Clean application in four work phases

Completely unload the firearm, remove ammunition from the work area, and make all metal surfaces to be treated accessible.
Completely remove oil, grease, and surface contamination. Bore Tech recommends Blast Degreaser for this; then let the surface dry completely.
Hold the bottle about 8 inches from the metal surface and spray evenly. For small areas, apply Shield XP to a clean cloth and wipe on thinly.
For long-term storage or extreme environments, wait about 15 minutes and then apply a second even layer.
Only store the firearm once the protective film has formed. After touching, moisture, or renewed cleaning, check whether the protective layer needs to be renewed.
If Shield XP was used in the barrel, run a dry patch before shooting and check the barrel for free passage.

Instructor tip: Divide the workbench into "cleaning," "drying," "protecting," and "lubricating." Shield XP is only used in the protection phase and only on the designated metal surfaces. Oil or grease is then applied separately and precisely at the friction points specified by the firearm manufacturer. This teaches participants that a shiny film on all parts does not replace systematic firearm maintenance.
User note: Pre-cleaning determines the barrier
A protective film adheres only as evenly as its substrate. Remaining oil, grease, fingerprints, or cleaner residues create uneven zones. Therefore, degrease and dry completely first instead of working over contamination with a thicker Shield XP layer.
User note: Choose direct spray or cloth application consciously
Direct spray application is suitable for freely accessible metal surfaces. Near wood, polymer, optics, grip material, or other surfaces not explicitly approved, controlled cloth application is the cleaner choice. The manufacturer's approval "for all metals" is not a blanket material approval for the entire firearm.
User note: Plan protection after the cleaner
After external cleaning with C4 Carbon Remover, Eliminator, or Rimfire Blend, wipe the treated metal surface clean and dry before applying Shield XP. Cleaner and protective agent fulfill consecutive, non-interchangeable tasks.
Shield XP, oil, or grease?

Protect external metal surfaces against rust: choose Shield XP. Lubricate and protect the barrel interior or moving parts simultaneously: check Friction Guard XP. Use dry sliding film for suitable contact points: check QWIK-DRI. Grease highly stressed sliding and locking points: check Extreme Grease HD. Remove fouling: first choose the cleaner matching the residue type; Shield XP does not replace this step.

FAQ
Is Shield XP a gun oil? No. Bore Tech describes it as rust and corrosion protection, not as a lubricant. For the barrel interior and moving parts, the manufacturer recommends Friction Guard XP.
Where is Shield XP mainly used? Primarily on the external metal surfaces of a firearm. According to the manufacturer, it forms a non-oily protective barrier against moisture, rust, and corrosive environments.
Can Shield XP also be used in the barrel? Yes, according to Bore Tech, it can be used in the barrel as long-term corrosion protection. Before shooting, a dry patch must be run through the barrel and free passage checked.
How is it applied for long-term storage? Degrease and dry metal surfaces first. Spray evenly or spread with a cloth, wait about 15 minutes, and apply a second coat for long-term storage or extreme environments.
What do the ASTM hour ratings mean? They document manufacturer test results of more than 500 hours in moisture testing and more than 100 hours in salt spray testing. No fixed storage duration for every real environment can be derived from this.
Which surfaces should I not just spray? The manufacturer approval refers to metals. Wood, polymer, optics, lenses, grip material, and other surfaces should not be treated indiscriminately; apply carefully nearby with a cloth. (Show description in original language)
