The WILD 635 combines a 640 × 512 sensor with a 35 mm lens and an approximately 22 m wide field of view at 100 m. That’s a strong combo for stalking, stand hunting, and territory monitoring: enough area for quick spotting, yet plenty of image info for assessment at practical distances.
Important before buying: This model estimates distances via AI. Only the WILD 635L has a real laser rangefinder.

Our honest assessment
The WILD 635 is not a pure long-range device. Its 2x base magnification and comparatively wide field of view show their strength where you want to quickly find game, track movement, and still recognize details. The sensitive sensor with NETD ≤ 18 mK helps especially with small temperature differences – for example in damp weather or against complex backgrounds.
The manufacturer states up to 1,800 m detection range. This means: A sufficiently large heat source can become visible under suitable conditions. It is not a guarantee for reliable species identification, sex determination, or a fair shot at this distance.

What the features really do outdoors
640 × 512 pixels · 12 µm
More sensor data provides reserves for contours and moderate digital zoom. With strong zoom, pixels are still only enlarged – no new optical details are created.
35 mm F0.8 · 22 m at 100 m
The wide field of view makes it easier to quickly scan clearings and forest edges. The 2x base magnification remains pleasantly steady but is less specialized for very wide open land.
NETD ≤ 18 mK · 50 Hz
Small temperature differences can be separated more cleanly; 50 Hz supports smooth display during movement. Fog, rain and high humidity still limit every thermal scope.
Focus wheel and joystick
Focus, zoom and central functions are designed for one-hand operation. This helps on the stalk – but does not replace the clean separate adjustment of diopter and objective focus.
AI distance estimation
The software derives distances from recognized object sizes. This is a guide, not a measurement: posture, partial obstruction and wrong object class can shift the estimate.
18650 interchangeable battery
Up to 8 hours manufacturer runtime and two batteries included provide reserves. Cold, Wi-Fi, display brightness and recording shorten the real runtime – carry a spare battery warm and protected.
Trainer and user tips
First eyepiece, then target: Set the diopter once sharp on the display symbols. Then focus the scene with the top wheel. If both settings are constantly changed simultaneously, the image appears unnecessarily unstable.
Start with neutral image values: The manual recommends level 5 for sharpness, noise reduction, brightness and contrast initially. Then adjust in small steps to weather and background; maximum sharpness often creates hard, artificial edges.
Use digital zoom sparingly: First search in the base image, stabilize the device and only then zoom for a control view. This preserves overview and reduces misinterpretations.
Make AI distance plausible: Treat the indication as a rough guide. Real user experience with the WILD 635 explicitly confirms that the AI estimate does not replace a laser.
Which alternative makes sense?
WILD 635 or WILD 635L? Image sensor, 35-mm class and basic character are closely related. The decisive difference is the distance measurement: The WILD 635 works with AI estimation, while the ThermTec WILD 635L with integrated laser rangefinder is the suitable alternative for reproducible measurements. Use safely and maintain for a long time
Never point the lens directly at the sun, lasers, or other intense heat sources. The anti-burn function is an additional protection level, not a free pass. Before rain, fully close the USB cover and battery compartment. When changing the battery in the rain, let the opened compartment dry before closing.
For longer storage, remove the battery, keep the device dry and well ventilated, and recharge approximately every three months according to the instructions. Clean lenses only with a suitable cloth and without pressure. Thermal imaging supports observation – legal requirements, safe identification, and responsible decisions always remain with the user.
FAQ about the ThermTec WILD 635
Does the WILD 635 have a laser rangefinder? No. The base model estimates distance via AI. The laser rangefinder is reserved for the WILD-LRF series or the WILD 635L.
Is the device more suited for forest or field? With a 22 m field of view width at 100 m, it is especially balanced for mixed hunting grounds, forest edges, stalking, and medium distances. For predominantly very wide open land, a higher base magnification may be more useful.
Can I safely identify game at 1,800 m? No. The figure refers to detecting a sufficiently large heat source under suitable conditions. Reliable identification is significantly closer and strongly depends on weather, target size, cover, and experience.
How long does a battery last? ThermTec states up to 8 hours for the WILD 635. In practice, cold, display brightness, Wi-Fi, recording, and usage intensity affect runtime. Two batteries and a charger are included according to the specification.
Can the WILD 635 save photos and videos? Yes. It has 64 GB internal memory, allows recording and playback, and can be connected via Wi-Fi/app or USB-C.
