Information about the Badger Skull
The badger skull is relatively elongated compared to its stocky body. Its eye sockets are relatively small. A good distinguishing feature for a badger skull is the pronounced sagittal crest, where the strong chewing muscles attach. Note: Young badgers do not yet have this crest; their skull is smooth on top. The older a badger gets, the more pronounced the sagittal crest becomes. And in male animals, the crest is more pronounced than in females.
The lower jaw of the adult badger has grown in such a way that it remains in the jaw joint at the skull. An adult badger can therefore mainly perform straight chewing movements and not sideways. The badger is an omnivore; it has relatively short canine teeth and possesses flat molars. In total, a badger has 38 teeth, its dentition consists of three incisors (Incisivi), one canine (Caninus), four premolars (Praemolares), and one molar (Molares) per upper jaw half, and three incisors (Incisivi), one canine (Caninus), four premolars (Praemolares), and two molars (Molares) per lower jaw half.
Dental formula upper jaw/lower jaw: Incisivi: 3/3, Caninus: 1/1, Praemolares: 4/4, Molares: 1/2
