Ullfrotté Original 400 grams can be used in colder conditions or during low activity. Then wear one of our thinner underwear models, Woolpower LITE or Ullfrotté 200, underneath, which are designed for direct skin contact. When you wear Woolpower directly on the skin, you can fully benefit from the advantages of Merino wool.
The crimped structure of the wool fiber traps large amounts of air and provides good thermal insulation. The air between the fibers reduces heat transfer in the material and thus acts as an insulator – both against heat and cold. Merino wool can have up to 40 crimps per centimeter, resulting in a high degree of insulation. The crimps of the fibers also lead to fewer contact points between the material and the skin. This is advantageous as it allows more air to be trapped and prevents heat from being conducted away.
With increased activity or rising ambient temperature, the body produces sweat to cool down, and moisture increases. Wool is hygroscopic and can absorb water vapor, i.e., moisture from the body. Wool can store moisture both between the fibers and inside the fiber, making wool feel dry on the skin even when it is wet.
The wool fiber can absorb up to 30 % of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet. Wool also generates heat when it is wet. When moisture is absorbed, so-called absorption heat is generated in an exothermic (chemically heat-releasing) process. Heat energy is released when water molecules and polar molecular groups of the fiber come into contact. The force of these collisions is so high that heat is generated.
