The FM 81 is derived from the field knife FM 78 of the Austrian Armed Forces and, unlike this, has a blade with serration. Therefore, the designation as a survival knife is also common. It can be used for any purpose: as a weapon or as an outdoor knife, for opening ammunition boxes or bottles. It can also be used as a throwing knife. The polymer sheath of this knife is also manufactured by GLOCK.

Das FM 81 ist aus dem Feldmesser FM 78 des österreichischen Bundesheeres hervorgegangen und besitzt im Gegensatz zu diesem eine Klinge mit Sägezahnung. Daher ist auch die Bezeichnung als Survivalmesser üblich.
Es kann für jeden Zweck verwendet werden: als Waffe oder als Outdoormesser, zum Öffnen von Munitionskisten oder Flaschen. Es kann ebenfalls als Wurfmesser verwendet werden. Die Polymerhülle dieses Messers wird ebenfalls von GLOCK hergestellt.
