Le 5,56x45mm est la dénomination métrique du 223 Remington (ainsi que la dénomination administrative). A ne pas confondre avec le 5.56x45mm NATO (ou 5,56x45mm OTAN) qui est une cartouche différente générant une pression plus élevée et qui est montée avec un projectile ayant une structure particulière. Le chambrage en 5.56 NATO diverge aussi légèrement du 223 Rem. avec comme principales différences une prise de rayure plus longue et un angle d’attaque des rayures moins prononcé pour faire baisser la pression de chambre du 5.56 NATO. Les armes vendues par BGM sont principalement chambrées en 5.56x45mm NATO et peuvent donc accepter les 2 types de cartouche indifféremment (cette information est généralement présente dans le descriptif des armes).
