Das Steyr AUG-Z A3 BMI / Polizei ist die zivile halbautomatische Ausführung des österreichischen AUG-Systems in der charakteristischen Bullpup-Bauweise. Durch die Anordnung der Systemkomponenten hinter dem Abzug erreicht das Gewehr eine kompakte Gesamtlänge bei gleichzeitig vollwertiger Lauflänge. Das gasbetriebene System arbeitet mit einem Drehkopfverschluss und einer starren Verriegelung.
Die A3-Ausführung verfügt über eine durchgehende Picatinny-Schiene nach MIL-STD-1913, die eine flexible Montage von Optiken und weiterem Zubehör ermöglicht. Der Lauf ist kaltgehämmert und verfügt über eine verchromte Laufbohrung einschließlich Patronenlager. Das AUG-System ist modular aufgebaut und ermöglicht unter anderem den schnellen Wechsel der Laufbaugruppe.
Die BMI-/Polizei-Ausführung basiert auf der für den behördlichen Einsatz entwickelten AUG-A3-Konfiguration und wurde für den zivilen Markt als halbautomatische Variante angeboten. STEYR führt die entsprechende A3-Police-Ausführung mit verkürztem Lauf, QD-Aufnahme an der oberen Schiene und zusätzlichen Montagemöglichkeiten am Vorderschaft. Die abgebildete Ausführung besitzt den charakteristischen weißen Polymer-Schaft und ist für das Kaliber .223 Remington ausgelegt.
