La munizione calibro .45 Colt ha contribuito alla storia dellAmerica; si tratta di una delle prime cartucce a bossolo metallico e percussione centrale ad essere stata creata nel 1873. La cartuccia calibro .45 Colt è anche conosciuta con la denominazione .45 Long Colt e con la denominazione metrica convenzionale 11,43x32 mm, anche se monta un proiettile di diametro reale pari a 11,50 mm. La sua storia è intimamente legata a quella del celebre Colt Single Action Army, conosciuto anche con il nome Peacemaker (Pacificatore). Per questa potente munizione, inizialmente caricata con polvere nera, sono state prodotte numerose armi da spalla, tra cui soprattutto carabine a leva di sottoguardia. Il calibro .45 Colt, adottato nel 1874 dall'esercito degli Stati Uniti, è rimasto in servizio fino al 1892 per essere poi sostituito dal .38 Longt Colt. L'esercito degli Stati Uniti è rapidamente ritornato al .45 Colt nel 1898, in occasione della guerra ispano-americana e filippino-americana. Questo calibro è stato definitivamente sostituito nel 1911, quando è stata adottata la pistola semiautomatica Colt Modello 1911 camerata per il .45 ACP. Oggi è considerato un calibro eccellente per la difesa personale e il tiro al bersaglio, ma è soprattutto una munizione di riferimento nell'attività di tiro del Cowboy Action Shooting. A tale scopo, Winchester propone un caricamento con palla di piombo da 16,20 grammi (250 grani)/229 m/s perfettamente ottimizzato, che permette tra l'altro di tirarlo con armi d'epoca.
